Balconies and loggias are an integral part of most apartments or houses and have long been used as a place to store various things. Even despite the fact that these rooms belong to the cold, because during the construction of the building they are not insulated and not glazed, they continue to be part of the room to which are attached, such as kitchens, bedrooms or living rooms.
Functional purpose of the balcony or loggia is determined by the owner of the living space, and the question of arrangement is solved by a huge range of building and finishing materials.
Thus it is necessary not only to determine the kind of finish, to plan the actions in advance and actually prepare the balcony for the final step — sheathing, but also take into careful consideration the choice of finishing materials. In such a situation quality is the main criterion, so the spontaneous and dubious acquisition of this or that finishing material «from hand» is best abandoned.
Balcony shelling — general rules and recommendations
In order for your balcony or loggia to become not only an attractive but also a functional addition to the general living space, you must first of all solve some problems. Initially it is necessary to determine the purpose of these premises. In other words, you need to decide whether these few meters will become an extension of the adjoining room or will remain separate.
The next stage is considered to be preparatory work, during which all the floors are repaired, doors and windows are installed. Next, work is done on the insulation of surfaces and assembled engineering distribution.
After all these simple manipulations, you can proceed to the selection of finish and directly to the process of tiling. And in this case, the choice of materials also depends on what kind of work you plan to do — externally or internally.
Finishing a balcony or loggia inside
Since the interior of the loggia or balcony is constantly in sight of the occupants and their guests, the choice of suitable finishing materials should be based on a combination of quality and attractiveness. This is especially important in the case of joining the room to the adjoining room.
Interior design «former» balcony and, for example, bedroom or living room, should correspond to each other. If your plans include the use of the balcony as an independent room, you can experiment a bit and use a very unexpected design techniques.
The chosen finishing materials for interior decoration of the balcony must be strong and durable, easy to care for and should look attractive. It is also easy to install and repairability that is especially important in case it is necessary to replace the damaged part of upholstery.
While choosing appropriate finishing materials for cladding a balcony or a loggia from the outer side, the priority is the same characteristics and requirements — durability, attractive appearance, easiness in care and installation, with a note on durability and reliability. After all, agree, it is this part of the balcony is much more exposed to the external environment and mechanical damage. Here it is important that the cladding not only looks nice and fashionable. It is, first of all, qualitative protection of the base of the structure, its inner space and insulation.
Paneling the loggia or balcony with batten
Felling is a narrow and thin chopped board containing natural moisture, which due to the unique structure and attractive appearance allows you to create a very original and cozy interior. You can arrange the batten horizontally and vertically, which will visually expand the room or, conversely, raise the ceiling height. This type of finishing belongs to natural, environmentally friendly materials and is considered durable.
With proper care and normal operating conditions, linings can last up to 25 years. Quality wood is not afraid of mechanical damage and has good indices of strength. Fretboard does not burn out in the sun, but requires periodic painting or varnish, refers to the expensive materials and requires a certain experience when installing. Used for both interior and exterior finishes.
Finishing balcony with PVC panels
PVC panels or plastic can be attributed to the most common and affordable option of finishing materials. In other words, it is a great value for money.
Produced plastic in the form of strips of a certain length and has a wide range of colors, which allows you to imitate any surface, for example, wood or decorative stone, as well as create your own design. It is mounted on the type of technology «tongue and groove» and does not need any special care.
Such finishing has good thermal insulation properties and is characterized by low cost, perfectly copes with temperature changes, but is sensitive to mechanical stresses and excessive heating. It is used for cladding the outer and inner part of the balcony.
The offer of this plan is a wood-fiber boards or panels of two types, which are made of particleboard. In the first example — these are flat products with a polymer coating on the front side. In the second — panels with embossed surface, imitating various drawings. With proper care, such paneling will last for many years.
In addition, MDF panels have excellent thermal insulation and soundproofing qualities. As for the disadvantages of such paneling, it is possible to note the sensitivity of the material to moisture. Even its slight impact on such a surface can provoke a process of deformation. Therefore, it is not recommended to use MDF as an external finish, and during the care of the panels should resort to the dry method of cleaning.
Siding for finishing balconies or loggias
Siding means «outer cladding,» and the material is made of fiber-cement, metal, plastic and other modified materials, and comes in the form of slats or panels. Mounted on a special siding frame, which is pre-assembled and attached to the wall surface.
Used siding, as a rule, for decoration of balconies on the outside. But if desired, can be used for interior cladding. The main advantages of such cladding are repairability and durability. It is also worth noting the external appeal and variety of design siding panels.
Cladding made of corrugated board
Trapezoidal or corrugated steel sheets are galvanized metal sheets with a corrugated surface, which are made of steel and covered with colored polymers. Installation of such finishing does not require preparatory work. And the material itself has a lot of advantages, among which are long life, much less weight and resistance to temperature fluctuations.
Also worth noting the high strength in bending, ease of installation and reasonable cost. Disadvantages of using corrugated board is the weak sound insulation and the need for additional use of insulation layer that can protect the room balcony or loggia from the cold, which means additional expenses.
The finishing materials proposed in this publication have a lot of advantages and only the balcony owners can decide what kind of cladding will be used for internal and external work. The main thing is to evaluate the price/quality ratio of the chosen cladding rationally.
